American alternative pop and electronic duo, Bahari formed in 2014 with Ruby Carr (vocalist, keyboardist) and Natalia Panzarella (vocalist, bassist). Their previous member, Sidney Sartini (vocalist, guitarist) left the band in 2018 to work on her own career.
Ruby Carr was raised in Kenya, South Africa, Natalia Panzarella is from Nashville, Tennessee and Sidney Sartini was born in Manhattan Beach, California. The previous trio met in Rock Mafia’s studio to work on their projects separately. Until, they started creating music together and formed the group, Bahari which means ocean in Carr’s native language.
They got signed with Interscope Records and debuted their first single, Wild Ones on October, 2014. It was featured in TV show, Teen Wolf. A year later, Bahari did a collaboration with Zedd on the single, Addicted to Memory for his album True Colours.
In 2016, the trio released their EP Dancing on the Sun which they had written for the record label when they were at the age of 16. Natalia explained in an interview about their process when creating the extended play quoting,
“When we wrote our first record, I think we were aiming to write positive uplifting songs to make everyone happy.” She continued,
“And that is an honest side of us. But life isn’t happy all the time. We’ve gone through a lot since our first record- we went from strangers to signing with a major label and touring with Selena Gomez in a short amount of time, and then finding ourselves label- free, and also dealing with love, loss, heartbreaks, and the growing pains of, well, growing up, and it’s made our songwriting more authentic. It's not all happy and shiny, but it’s real.
The group also was the supporting act for Birdy during the summer of 2016, and did a collaboration with Grey for the single, I Miss You the following year. In 2018, Bahari left Interscope and independently released their singles, as well as making the announcement that they were releasing their debut album in the fall.
On December of the same year, Sidney made the decision to leave the group and did their last performance together in October. The following year, the duo collaborated with Illenium on Crashing for his album, Ascend and released their latest single, Sad Face (:( ).
