Ari Staprans Leff also known as his stage name, Lauv was born on August, 1994 in San Francisco, California. Throughout his childhood, he was raised in Atlanta, Georgia; until, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his family.
At the age of eleven to fourteen, Leff practiced playing the guitar and started writing songs after learning on the piano and viola. He studied at Radnor High School and during his time there, he was in several bands and pursued an interest in electronic music after learning jazz.
Leff graduated from New York University with a major in music technology. Also, he studied abroad in Prague and was an intern for Jungle City Studios; where the major artists such as, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z recorded their music.
During his time at NYU, he started working on producing and writing singles for other artists and came up with the stage name, Lauv which is Latvian for ‘lion’. In 2014, he was inspired from his break up, and co-wrote his first single The Other with Michael Matosic. After graduated from university, he signed to the publishing company, Prescription Songs.
The following year, Lauv released his first EP Lost In The Light with the Soundcloud viral hit single, The Other. He co-produced and written Cheat Codes’, No Promises featuring Demi Lovato.
In 2017, Lauv released the single I Like Me Better which was inspired by his relationship after he moved to New York and was included in his second extended play, Lauv EP. Leff was featured on DJ Snake’s, A Different Way. Around the same year, he went on his headlining Late Night, Deep Talks tour throughout America, and he was the supporting act for Ed Sheeran’s Divide Tour.
During the first half of 2018, Lauv went on his, I Met You When I Was 18 world tour with Jeremy Zucker and Ashe as his supporting acts. In May of the same year, he officially released his full length compilation album I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist). For thirteen weeks straight, he was number one on the Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart, and did a collaboration with Julia Michaels on the single There’s No Way.
The following year, Lauv released i’m so tired... featuring Troye Sivan and heading his Asian tour. He produced the singles, Sad Forever and F**k, I’m Lonely for the 13 Reasons Why season 3 soundtrack which featured Anne-Marie. he announced that he is going on his, The How I’m Feeling Tour which starts from October to November.
Lauv mentioned in the single Drugs & the Internet that struggled with depression when he wrote the lyrics of the song. It is included in the upcoming album, how i’m feeling which is set to release on March 2020.
