Melanie Martinez was born in Astoria, Queens 1995, and raised in Baldwin, New York. Throughout her childhood and as she grew older, she developed interests in poetry, photography, and painting. In 2012, she auditioned for The Voice with the cover she sang of Britney Spears’ Toxic. She got into the show, and made a decision to chose Maroon 5’s lead singer, Adam Levine. Martinez stayed in The Voice until, fans decided to eliminate her on the fifth week of the show.
A couple of years later, Martinez decided to work on her music independently and released her EP, Dollhouse which features the title track through the record deal she signed to Atlantic Records. Her other single, Carousel was certified gold, and was featured in the tv streaming show, American Horror Story: Freak Show.
In 2015, she debuted her album, Cry Baby and it is based on the struggles in Melanie’s past that dealt with over the years of her life. It included tracks such as, Pity Party which the chorus is a sample of Lesley Gore’s Its My Party, Soap, the title track, karaoke style Alphabet Boy, Milk and Cookies, Alison in Wonderland-esque, Mad Hatter, and Mrs. Potato Head. A year later, in promotion of her album she released her fragrance called, Cry Baby Perfume Milk.
From 2016 to 2019, Martinez put out her second EP Cry Baby’s Extra Clutter. Her debut album was certified platinum and currently releasing her sophomore album, K-12 which it will out in September 2019. It carries on the story of Cry Baby. Her music has the contrast of dark and honest lyrics with the sounds of music boxes, and baby pianos.
