Victoria Kelly or Tori for short was born on December, 1992 in Wildomar, California. Kelly participated in Star Search, and won 2004’s America’s Most Talented Kids, singing a rendition of Christina Aguilera’s Keep on Singin’ My Song. She got signed to Geffen Records; until, she left soon afterwards due creative difficulties.
In 2007, she did a cover of John Wesley Work Jr.’s Go Tell It on the Mountain, which she posted on YouTube as her first video. Kelly originally performed the single on December 2004. She started to gain recognition after she collaborated on a video with Angie Girl of an acoustic cover of Frank Ocean’s, Thinkin Bout You.
Three years later, Kelly auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol in Denver, Colorado. After she left the show, due to the fact she didn’t make the Top 24, she was asked to do a cover of the 1985 charity single We Are the World for the project titled We Are the World: The Next Generation.
Kelly released her first EP, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly in 2012 through her own label, Toraay Records. She independently produced the EP, which reached the Top 10 Pop Albums list on iTunes. The following year, she wrote the single Fill a Heart for the ‘Child Hunger Ends Here’ campaign by Feeding America and ConAgra Foods. The single was performed by British boy band, The Wanted on Dancing With The Stars.
She performed at eight venues across America for her Fill a Heart tour and provided help for the cities’ food banks throughout the day. On September 2013, she was signed to Capitol Records and made her debut on NBC’s Today Show with her performance of the single, Dear No One. Kelly released her second EP Foreword and was the supporting act for Ed Sheeran at Madison Square Garden. She toured with Sam Smith on his ‘In This Lonely Hour U.K. tour in the fall of 2014’.
Kelly supported the book to film adaption, The Giver by producing the single Silent for The Giver: Music Collection. She did a collaboration with British rapper Professor Green on the single Lullaby, and on December 2014, MTV announced that Kelly was one of their artist’s to watch. The following year, she released her debut album Unbreakable Smile with her lead single, Nobody Love. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200, she performed her single and Should’ve Been Us at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards and MTV’s VMAs.
On the fall of 2015, she did a cover of Colors of the Wind from the film, Pocahontas for the We Love Disney album. Kelly re-released Unbreakable Smile in 2016 with Hollow as the first single, and was the brand ambassador for Justin Timberlake’s co-funding clothing line, William Rast.
She received an Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and did a performance with James Bay. Kelly did her first voice over role in the 2016 animated film, Sing and released Blink of an Eye in honour of her close friend Christina Grimmie. In 2017, she opened for Soundgarden at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee before their frontman Chris Cornell passed away.
A month after she did her performance at the event, Kelly was featured in Lecrae’s single I’ll Find You. The visuals included patients from St. Jude hospital. It peaked number eleven on the Billboard R&B/ HipHop Charts. She did a collaboration with country singer Chris Lane on his single, Take Back Home Girl and released her lead track from her second album, Help Us to Love featuring the HamilTones in 2018.
Her sophomore album, Hiding Place came out in September with her other single, Never Alone (featuring Kirk Franklin) won Best Gospel Performance/Song at the Grammys. Also, Hiding Place earned her an award for Best Gospel Album.
On January 2019, she announced that she going on The Acoustic Sessions tour a month later along with the release of the singles, Change Your Mind and Sorry Would Go A Long Way from her third album, Inspired by True Events.
